Bristol

This document has been prepared for people who will be maintaining a Zope website . The site uses the Zope (Z Objects Programming Environment) Content Management System. The document does not intend to cover all aspects of Zope or content management but should provide the basics for maintaining a Zope website at the University of Bristol.

These notes have been adapted from information provided for staff in Information Services. Minor differences may exist for websites in other departments.
Among other things Zope allows us to easily insert a standard header and footer in each page and to develop tools that will enable us to provide a more functional and easily-navigable site.

Zope management screens
Zope has a number of management screens to help with maintaining the website. To access these:
Using a web browser, view the folder or page you wish to edit (and to which you have access)
Select the URL/Location bar and click at the end of the URL

Type /manage at the end of the page/folder location
If you haven't already done so, you will be prompted to login with your username and password for 'Zope' at www.bris.ac.uk - enter your UoB username and password.
For example, if you enter the web URL http://www.bristol.ac.uk/is/services/manage, the Zope management screen at: https://www.bris.ac.uk/is/services/manage is displayed. Any objects - web documents, images, folders, files - within the services folder will be listed in the right-hand pane. A list of subfolders is displayed in the left hand pane (for navigation purposes).

Notes: you are redirected to the secure connection, https. This example assumes that you have been given access to manage files within the /is/services folder. If you are denied access to management screens, and you know that you should have access to the area specified, check first that you have not added a trailing / to the URL (after manage).
Adding documents
In the Contents screen for folders, there is an Add function that lets you pull files from the PC.

To create a new document:
Click on the down arrow beside Available Objects and select the required object type (for example, Page Template)
In the Id box, type a name for the document (for example, example.html)
Click on the Browse button beside the File box and select a file from the PC
Click on Add to copy the file from the PC to the website
Object types
When creating web documents there are several object types available including Page Template, HTML Document and DTML Document. All of these types are currently used on the University's websites.
